Faulks On Fiction: The Villain

BBC 2 - 60’ (2011)

In this landmark BBC series Faulks on Fiction, novelist Sebastian Faulks looks at how the characters of the British novel have developed since the birth of the novel some three hundred years ago. For this the concluding episode, Sebastian walks in the footsteps of literary villains charting their wicked progress from the inventor of the modern novel Samuel Richardson's rake, ney rapist, Lovelace in Clarissa to the megalomaniac Steerpike in Mervyn Peake's other worldly Gormenghast to the equally devious yet much more ordinary character, a sixty something history teacher at a comprehensive school in London called Barbara, in Zoe Heller's Notes on a Scandal.
